Celebrating International Clean Energy Day with Environmental Commitment
The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed January 26 as International Clean Energy Day, a date intended to commemorate the anniversary of the founding of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in 2009. This day becomes relevant by accelerating the global energy transition towards renewable sources and modern, sustainable and accessible energy systems, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.
In this context, Francesco La Camera, Director General of IRENA, has expressed his enthusiasm for the UN decision to establish the International Clean Energy Day, applauding Member States, including the United Arab Emirates and Panama, for their role in this initiative.
What are clean energies?
Clean energies, also known as renewable energies or green energies, are those energy sources obtained from inexhaustible natural resources or that are regenerated in a short period. These sources do not generate greenhouse gas emissions or atmospheric pollutants, thus contributing to reducing environmental impact and combating climate change.
Notable examples of clean energy include solar, wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, and biomass-derived energy. These sources are not only sustainable in the long term but also reduce dependence on fossil fuels, promoting environmentally friendly energy systems.
