Heineken beer was brewed in 1873 by MR. Bayrem, Rome and Hugo. In 1886, H. Elion discovered type "A" yeast, which gives the characteristic flavor to this beer.

Since 1975, the majority of Heineken brand beers have been brewed at Heineken's main brewery, located in Zoeterwoude, the Netherlands.

In 2011, 2.74 billion liters of Heineken beer were produced around the world, while the total beer production produced by the Heineken Group was 16.46 billion liters.
